چکیده

The role of multistage turbomachinery simulation in the development of propulsion system models is discussed. Particularly, the need for simulations with higher fidelity and faster turnaround time is highlighted. It is shown how such fast simulations can be used in engineering-oriented environments. The use of parallel processing to achieve the required turnaround times is discussed. Current work by several researchers in this area is summarized. Parallel turbomachinery CFD research at the NASA Lewis Research Center is then highlighted. These efforts are focused on implementing the average-passage turbomachinery model on MIMD, distributed memory parallel computers. Performance results are given for inviscid, single blade row and viscous, multistage applications on several parallel computers, including networked workstations.

Turbomachinery computational fluid dynamics: asymptotes and paradigm shifts.

This paper reviews the development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) specifically for turbomachinery simulations and with a particular focus on application to problems with complex geometry. The review is structured by considering this development as a series of paradigm shifts, followed by asymptotes. The original S1-S2 blade-blade-throughflow model is briefly described, followed by the de...

Dynamic Load Balancing Applications on a Heterogeneous Unix/nt Cluster

This study involves parallel computing and dynamic load-balancing applications on heterogeneous computer systems using our previously developed tools. A large-scale turbomachinery CFD code is chosen as the application code implemented on a cluster of Unix/IBM RS6000 and Windows NT/Pentium II workstations. The objective here is to be able to run large-scale codes routinely for solving problems o...

Computational fluid dynamics for turbomachinery design

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) probably plays a greater part in the aerodynamic design of turbomachinery than it does in any other engineering application. For many years the design of a modern turbine or compressor has been unthinkable without the help of CFD and this dependence has increased as more of the flow becomes amenable to numerical prediction. The benefits of CFD range from short...

Core-Line-Based Vortex Hulls in Turbomachinery Flows

In today's CFD-assisted turbomachinery design, a primary objective is to minimize the effects of vortices. Their automatic identification, along with other flow structures, in numerical data is a current research topic. This paper presents a novel method to find vortex hulls in turbomachinery flows automatically. Based on a vortex core line that is the centerline of the vortex, the method is ab...
